AUTUMN GARDEN TASKS: TIPS FOR ALMATY AND THE REGION

Autumn garden work begins with soil preparation. After harvesting or leaf fall, it’s important to remove plant debris, weeds, and old mulch to prevent the spread of fungal diseases and pests. Loosening the soil, especially in flower beds and vegetable patches, improves air circulation to the roots and stimulates microbial activity.
In the dry areas of Almaty and nearby regions, the soil can quickly dry out, so maintaining optimal moisture is crucial. Adding organic fertilizers such as compost, humus, or mineral blends enriches the soil with nutrients for the winter. This approach not only prepares plants for cold weather but also improves soil structure.
Mulching protects plant roots from sudden temperature changes and helps retain moisture. You can use bark, sawdust, dried grass, or pine needles, spreading a layer 5–7 cm thick. This layer prevents weed growth, reduces water evaporation, and creates a favorable microclimate for roots. Additionally, organic mulch gradually decomposes, further enriching the soil.

Autumn is the optimal time for sanitary and formative pruning of trees and shrubs. Removing dry, diseased, or damaged branches prevents the spread of diseases and enhances the plants’ appearance. For fruit trees, corrective pruning is essential to maintain a balanced crown and prevent overly dense growth, which can negatively affect yield.
Attention should also be given to protecting plants from frost, cold winds, and pests. Young trees and sensitive shrubs should be insulated with agro-fabrics, burlap, or spruce branches. For conifers and evergreen plants, spraying with fungicides and insecticides helps reduce the risk of diseases and insect damage during the cold season.

Lawns require special attention in autumn. After removing fallen leaves and trimming the grass, aerating the soil improves air and water penetration to the roots. Autumn fertilization with high-potassium fertilizers strengthens the root system and increases the lawn’s resistance to frost. Removing moss and weeds also ensures a healthy, even lawn in spring.
Autumn is also an excellent time to plant perennials, shrubs, and some trees. The Almaty climate allows planting until the first frosts, giving plants time to root and prepare for the next season. When planting, consider site conditions: sunny and shaded areas, soil moisture, and local climate specifics. New plants should be watered moderately, avoiding overwatering to ensure proper root development.
Proper lawn preparation and autumn planting ensure not only a beautiful, well-maintained garden in spring but also long-term plant health. A systematic approach helps maintain garden aesthetics and reduces effort in the spring.
