WINTER GARDEN CARE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Before the onset of stable frost, sanitary pruning is carried out: dry, damaged, or diseased branches are removed to reduce the risk of infection. Fruit trees are additionally whitewashed with lime solution to protect trunks from sunscald and pests. Young trees and shrubs are wrapped with agrofiber or burlap to prevent frost cracks and rodent damage. Sensitive plants such as roses, grapes, and rhododendrons require frame structures with insulation for reliable shelter.
Perennials need their above-ground parts trimmed and mulched with peat, compost, or fallen leaves to protect roots from freezing. Conifers are tied with twine to prevent snow breakage. Lawns should be thoroughly cleared of leaves, as leaf cover may cause grass rot.

Autumn deep watering is a key stage in winter preparation. It saturates the soil with moisture, helping plants survive frosts without water deficiency. This is especially important for sandy soils that dry out quickly.
Mulching provides multiple benefits: it retains moisture, prevents deep freezing, and enriches the soil with organic matter. Materials like straw, compost, pine needles, sawdust, or bark are commonly used. During snowy winters, snow should be evenly distributed across the garden as it serves as natural insulation for the soil and roots. At the same time, heavy wet snow should be carefully removed from branches to prevent breakage.
Container plants need special attention: they should be moved to sheltered areas or insulated with foam and burlap.

A garden is more than just plants — landscape structures also require protection. Stone pathways and pavements may crack due to frost and ice, so they should be cleared regularly, using plant-safe de-icing agents. Wooden terraces and benches should be treated with protective solutions against moisture and mold.
Special care is needed for water features and irrigation systems. Pumps and hoses must be drained and stored to prevent freezing damage. Artificial ponds should be cleared of leaves and partially drained if possible.
Lighting plays a dual role: it enhances safety and creates aesthetic winter accents. Checking wiring and replacing bulbs in advance allows for a cozy illuminated garden. Small architectural forms — pergolas, arches, sculptures — are protected from wind and moisture with specialized coatings.
