HOW TO DESIGN A BARBECUE AREA IN YOUR GARDEN

The location of your barbecue area plays a crucial role. It’s best to choose a solid, even surface with good ventilation but some protection from strong winds. If there are trees nearby, make sure the cooking area is far enough from branches to ensure fire safety.
When planning the layout, consider the size of your garden and how many people will typically use the space. For a small family, an area of 10–15 m² is enough; for frequent gatherings, plan for 20 m² or more. On uneven terrain, a multi-level terrace works beautifully — one level for the grill and another for dining or lounging.
Functional zoning is key to convenience. The cooking area should be sheltered from rain, with easy access to water and electricity. The dining space is best placed closer to greenery or flowerbeds for a relaxing atmosphere. If possible, add a canopy or pergola with a fabric roof — that way, the area can be used in any weather.

The materials you choose determine both the appearance and durability of the area. For flooring, opt for clinker tiles, granite, concrete pavers, or decking boards — all are moisture- and heat-resistant. Stone surfaces are also easy to clean and maintain.
The focal point of the area can be a stationary brick barbecue, an outdoor fireplace, or a built-in grill made from heat-resistant materials. Mobile metal grills with fireproof coatings are a good option for smaller spaces. To increase functionality, consider an outdoor kitchen setup — a stone countertop, stainless-steel sink, and storage for utensils or firewood.
Safety is essential. The surface around the grill should be fireproof, and a metal screen or decorative wall can protect nearby plants and furniture from heat.
Furniture defines the comfort of the space. Choose durable, weather-resistant pieces made from synthetic rattan, teak, or metal. Cushions with water-repellent covers withstand both rain and sun. Add a hammock, swing, or bench to make the area even more inviting.

Décor gives the barbecue area character and ties it into the overall garden design — whether modern, rustic, or classic.
Greenery plays both a functional and decorative role: it provides shade, blocks the wind, and visually softens the space. Climbing plants like ivy, honeysuckle, or wild grape look beautiful on pergolas. Low shrubs such as boxwood, barberry, or lavender define borders. Aromatic herbs — basil, rosemary, mint — add freshness and a pleasant scent.
Lighting is equally important. Built-in pathway lights, string lights under the canopy, or wall sconces near the grill create a warm, welcoming ambiance. Adjustable lighting lets you set the mood — brighter for cooking, softer for relaxing evenings.
For decorative accents, natural materials work best: stone planters, wrought iron details, lanterns, wooden barrels, or clay pots. These add texture, personality, and harmony with the garden’s natural setting.
