HOW TO DESIGN A GARDEN IN PROVENCE STYLE

Provence values simplicity and naturalness. The main palette is pastel: cream, soft blue, light lavender, olive, and off-white. These colors pair perfectly with natural materials such as stone, wood, and ceramics. Pathways are best laid with light limestone, terracotta, or slightly irregular paving stones to preserve the “aged” garden look.
Fences and borders should be light and delicate: wooden picket fences, wrought-iron designs with graceful curves, or woven structures. Avoid bright plastic elements and glossy surfaces, as they disrupt the natural harmony of the style. Instead of perfectly trimmed lawns, use ornamental grasses, groundcover plants, and flower borders to create a sense of effortless charm.

Plants are the soul of a Provençal garden. Lavender is the star: it sets the color, fragrance, and mood. Plant it along pathways, near entrances, or in large pots. Complement it with rosemary, thyme, savory, and sage — they are not only decorative but also useful in the kitchen.
For lush blooms, choose shrub roses, pelargoniums, verbenas, and perennials like irises and peonies. In shaded areas, hydrangeas, lilacs, and hostas thrive beautifully. Plant compositions should be arranged freely, avoiding strict symmetry — let them intermingle naturally for that “wild beauty” effect.
An important detail is seasonal change. In spring, tulips and daffodils will brighten the garden; in summer, lavender and roses take the lead; in autumn, ornamental grasses and asters add charm. This keeps the garden alive and ever-changing.

In a Provence garden, furniture should be both functional and inviting. Opt for wooden or wrought-iron pieces with a touch of patina: benches with a weathered finish, tables with whitewashed surfaces, wrought chairs with soft linen or cotton cushions.
For lounging, wicker chairs and hanging swings fit perfectly. Tabletops are often decorated with ceramic mosaics, and textiles are chosen with small floral prints or delicate embroidery.
Décor plays a key role: clay pots, ceramic pitchers, metal lanterns, vintage flower baskets, and small statues of animals or angels. Light curtains on the terrace that sway in the wind add softness.
