GARDEN ON A SLOPE IN THE CONDITIONS OF ALMATY HILLS

One of the key conditions for working successfully with terrain is terracing. It allows you to “calm” the slope, structure it, and make it suitable for planting, recreation, and movement. First, the site is analyzed from a geodetic perspective: the slope angle, water runoff directions, and groundwater depth are determined. Then, levels with retaining walls or natural height changes are designed.
In Almaty’s conditions, where heavy rains are frequent, a drainage system is essential. Without it, even the most beautiful garden can quickly suffer from erosion. It is important to direct and slow down water flow, especially on steep slopes. Deep slot drains, gravel beds under plants, gabions, or French drains are commonly used. Water collection zones are created to accumulate excess water and direct it to storm drains or special decorative ponds.
Functional zones are created on each terrace level. For example, the upper level can serve as a viewing platform with a gazebo or bench, the middle as an area for flower beds, rock gardens, and shrubs, and the lower as a more secluded place with a pond or lawn. As a result, the garden gains landscape expressiveness and becomes convenient for everyday use.

Plant selection in the conditions of Almaty’s slopes is not only an aesthetic matter but also an engineering challenge. The main criteria are the plants’ ability to hold soil, survive on a sloping surface, and withstand the local climate. High summer temperatures, cool mountain winds, and sharp weather changes all require resilience.
Shrubs with well-developed root systems are a must. These include junipers, cotoneasters, spireas, dogwoods, and potentillas. They form a living “net” that strengthens the slope. Decorative grasses like fescue, miscanthus, and feather grass are also effective — they are not only beautiful but also tolerate drought and wind well.
Groundcover plants such as periwinkle, sedum, and phlox spread quickly, creating a dense carpet that protects the slope from washing away. They are ideal for planting on steep areas where regular maintenance is difficult.

A hilly site is a great background for architectural solutions that would look ordinary on flat terrain. Retaining walls become not only structural elements but also important parts of the garden’s visual image. They are made of natural stone, brick, concrete, wood, or gabions — the choice depends on the overall landscape style.
Stairs are an indispensable element on a sloped site. They can be straight or winding, with resting platforms, built-in flowerpots, or lanterns. Ramps provide accessibility for all ages and give the site a modern and functional appearance.
Water features are especially effective on relief. Artificial streams cascading down and waterfalls emphasize the garden’s natural dynamics. The sound of flowing water makes the atmosphere more lively and calming. Such water elements can also be combined with the drainage system, solving several problems at once.
